Woohoo! (Probably) The most anticipated movie of the year is here! Pre-sale tickets are sold out and people are excited, including me. I had the luck to watch it on the second day after it's released in Indonesia. I also have to try my best to stay away from all the spoilers scattered everywhere in social media. Sadly, I got two spoiler :( Nevertheless, the movie is still very enjoyable, very exciting, and not disappointing at all.
This post CONTAINS SPOILER but it's the complete version of my review. It's intended to be read by those who have watched the movie or don't mind reading spoiler. For those who haven't watched the movie, you can read my shorter review without any spoiler here.
WHAT'S GOOD ABOUT IT?
1. THE ANTICIPATION
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Marvel did a great job creating a new culture of movies, which is this Universe thing. DC and Universal even tried to do the same thing but sadly didn't go well. Marvel, on the other hand, succeeded very well. All started with Iron Man, and thankfully that movie was a huge success. Every other MCU movie that follows aren't all great, but overall, good and lovable enough to make people want to know more. Plus they're all connected in some way, building expectations and interest of the audience. And after 10 years, they all meet here in Infinity War. I mean, who's not excited to see everyone get together and smash things together, right?
2. THE ACTION
It's a superhero movie, so yeah it's all about the action. And as Marvel always do, it's awesome! It's not mainly because of the movements, the punching, and the shooting, we've seen that way too much for the past 10 years. It's because of all the characters fighting together, side by side, using their own, personal, trademark weapon. Plus, their weapons are mostly upgraded, like Spider-man's costume, Iron Man's suit, and Thor getting a new ax. That means the action is also upgraded, considering everyone can do more now. That's why it's awesome.
3. EVERYBODY MEETING EVERYBODY
For the last 18 movies, we only get to see a glimpse of a character's or the story's connection with the next movie through the post-credit scene. Now, we finally get to see everyone meeting everyone after all those anticipation. A lot of unexpected mixture of who meets who first and what happens to them next. I really didn't expect Thor to meet Guardians of The Galaxy first. I didn't expect Peter Dinklage to play a giant dwarf creating Thor's new ax (maybe I just didn't read the news, but I'm thrilled to know it now instead of before). And it's amazing to see Doctor Strange got stuck in another planet with Guardians of the Galaxy. Everything is put in perfect places with perfect timing, so you won't be disappointed.
4. THE JOKES
Not too much or too lame, just enough to make you laugh once a while and wake you from all the seriousness. Spider-Man doing his jokes, Star-Lord being funny as he always does, Drax being ridiculous, and Thor still got his funny side from Thor: Ragnarok.
5. THE ENDING
It was seriously unexpected! I didn't know there will be this many death in the movie. The death of Heimdall, Loki, Gamora, and Vision are not too much to process because deaths like that happen in superhero movies. But the ending when half of them perish? I didn't see that coming. Now I want to watch the part two even more. I want to know what happens to them next. Did Marvel just kill everyone that we love or are they coming back? I'm hoping very much they're coming back, I just don't know how they'll do it between Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel. Another unexpected story, I guess. Exciting!
WHAT'S NOT GOOD ABOUT IT?
1. NOT ENOUGH HULK :(
I'm actually pretty disappointed to only see Hulk once in this movie. It's quite a funny move to make Hulk and Banner "fighting" throughout the movie, but I'd still rather see Hulk fight those monsters in Wakanda than Banner in a Hulkbuster. I really hope there will be more Hulk in part two.
2. TOO MUCH SUDDEN SAVE
You know those times when the movie makes it look like no one else is there to save the day or punch the bad guy one more time and then suddenly someone came out of nowhere and saves everybody? Yeah, there's A LOT of them in this movie. It gets pretty lame after too many times. I'd love to say the characters are the ones that make them don't look so lame and predictable, but I can't. I do feel like it's not surprising anymore even though this time it's Star-Lord and the next is Thor. It's still the same move no matter what.
WHAT'S SO-SO ABOUT IT?
1. SOME TALKING SCENES
I put it in this section because to be honest, if it's not Infinity War, it might be boring enough for you to not ever watch it again, but the characters save it. I mean, you wouldn't be bored if it's Thor talking to the Guardians of The Galaxy, right? Or Captain America talking to Black Panther? So, if you've been watching all the MCU movies, you won't be bored. But you might realize that this talking has been going on for quite some time and starts to miss the action.
2. SOME CHARACTERS AREN'T THERE
Marvel do this sometimes and it's actually for a better cause. Like how they didn't put Thor and Hulk in Civil War but make them meet in Thor: Ragnarok. People got excited for that because they want to know where they were during Civil War. But I'm quite disappointed that Ant-Man and Hawkeye isn't here :( Also, no Valkyrie from Thor: Ragnarok, Agent Ross from Civil War and Black Panther, Nakia from Black Panter, and Sharon Carter from Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Civil War. It might be too full if they appear because even without them, it's already too many people. Hopefully they'll appear in part two or somewhere else cause it's pretty sad to forget about them just like that.
3. NOT ENOUGH CAPTAIN AMERICA SQUAD
This movie focuses more on Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Guardians of the Galaxy in their journey in space and different planets. Everybody else on Wakanda doesn't get that much screen time. I'd love to see Captain America, Falcon, Bucky, and Black Widow a lot more. Still, the battle near the ending is just awesome and satisfying. It got even better when Thor appeared with his new ax and his new friends, Rocket and Groot.
4. THANOS
To be honest, he's not the best villain MCU has ever had. He only looks terrifying because everyone is so afraid of him that they have to join forces to beat him (and in the end still don't). Again, if it's not Infinity War and all the superheroes aren't uniting to fight him, he's just another disposable villain. But thankfully, for this movie, you'll like him enough to put your attention to him.
PLOT HOLES
1. PETER CHANGES INTO HIS COSTUME IN FRONT OF EVERYONE
There might be chances that no one sees that because everyone was distracted by the huge flying donut-shaped spaceship, but it's still out in the open and a lot of people might see him changing. He even swung around wearing only the mask, which means some people might recognize his clothes. Well, this might not be important at all knowing the universe is in danger, but still, bothering enough for me because Peter has always been so good in keeping secret his identity.
2. HOW DID THOR, ROCKET, AND GROOT TRANSPORTED TO EARTH?
This question might have its answer in the comic books, but I'm only going to judge from the movie since I don't read the comics. The three of them went to earth after getting Thor's new weapon in Nivadellir. Thing is, it looks like they traveled with Bifrost Bridge (judging from the colorful lights when they're about to enter the battlefield), which only Heimdall can control (like in the first scenes where Heimdall transported Hulk to earth). But Heimdall is dead. So shouldn't the three of them not be able to do that? They could've just gone to earth using their spaceship, but I suppose it won't look cool and takes too much time to arrive.
So that's all I can talk about Avengers: Infinity War. Despite some flaws and plot holes, this movie is still very enjoyable and live up to our expectations.
